A Restored Piece of Newport History

Restoring 108 Prospect Hill Street has been an honor and a journey. Dating back to 1758–1774, was originally built for Latham Thurston, a Quaker hatter and tailor. It stands as a testament to the craftsmanship and character of its era.

As an architect, I’ve always believed that every historic home has a story to tell. Restoring 108 Prospect Hill Street in Newport, Rhode Island, was not just about preserving a structure—it was about honoring a legacy that dates back to the mid-18th century. Located in the Newport National Historic Landmark District, this home is a remarkable piece of history, originally constructed between 1758 and 1774 for Latham Thurston, a Quaker hatter and tailor.

A Journey Through History

108 Prospect Hill Street stands as a testament to Newport’s vibrant past. During the 18th century, Newport flourished as a bustling seaport, attracting a diverse community drawn to its promise of religious tolerance and economic opportunity. Thurston’s home, like many others built during this prosperous time, reflects the architectural trends and craftsmanship of its era.

Over the centuries, the home changed hands numerous times, passing through families who left their own marks on the property. From its original rusticated siding—a wooden technique designed to mimic stone—to its transformation into a multi-family home in the early 20th century, the house has evolved while retaining its historic character.

Restoring the Past for the Future

When I first approached this project, I knew it would require a balance of preservation and modernization. The original rusticated siding, for instance, had been hidden under clapboards for years. Restoring this feature was a labor of love, as it brought back the home’s 18th-century charm and showcased the meticulous craftsmanship of the period.

Every detail of the restoration was guided by a commitment to authenticity. From the structure’s historic proportions to the subtle updates that make it livable by today’s standards, the goal was to create a home that respects its roots while embracing the present.

A Home Ready for Its Next Chapter

108 Prospect Hill Street is more than just a house; it’s a piece of Newport’s legacy. Restoring this home has been an incredible privilege, and I’m proud to see it standing ready for its next chapter. Now on the market, this property offers a unique opportunity for someone who values the intersection of history, craftsmanship, and modern living.
